Therapy & Counseling Services
Our primary service is clinical therapy and counseling. These clinical psychotherapy services include traditional individual therapy and coaching, couples counseling, and DBT skills group therapy.
Our therapists work with most adult clients and issues. Particular interests include problems with anxiety (including social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD), depression, relationship issues, substance abuse and addictions, borderline personality disorder (BPD), adults with Asperger’s and autism spectrum disorders, trauma and PTSD, and life transitions.
In addition, our therapists have a particular interest in working with individuals interested in social justice, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, the creative arts, and therapists seeking therapy.
We use a collaborative model of psychotherapy, where sessions are more like a conversation between peers than a traditional doctor/patient relationship. We do not view clients’ issues as coming from an abnormal psychopathology, but instead as your normal reaction to living in a stressful, complex, and contradictory world.
It is our job to understand your issues in the context of your unique experience rather than viewing you as having something wrong or being broken. Only then can we assist you in creating change and feeling better.
In couples counseling the relationship is the client. We don’t take sides and instead focus on relationship transformation – creating the relationship that works for you and your partner.
We are able to help with problems such as:
- Managing conflict and being able to discuss conflict in a way that does not feel like it spirals out of control
- Increasing the romantic connection
- Discovering ways to bring the fun, friendship, laughter, and intimacy back into your relationship
- Improving communication patterns so that you both have a voice and really hear one another
- Resolving recurring conflicts or stressors
- Creating safe spaces within your relationship to deal with external stresses
- Rebuilding trust
Your relationship is unique. We help you create the relationship that works for you. You and your partner are the experts in defining what is important to you.
Group therapy can be an extremely effective tool for working through a myriad of complex issues and is often used to augment ongoing individual clinical work. In fact, it is not uncommon to experience as more powerful and transformative than individual work.
Online/Telehealth – Video Calls
Our telehealth sessions are conducted via a secure video call, similar to FaceTime or Skype, that allows clients to meet with their PeoplePsych therapist in a private offsite setting – such as at their home or office. We offer sessions via a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform called doxy.me. Doxy.me works through a dedicated website link and requires no special application or other download. Video call based therapy can be especially useful and clinically appropriate for many clients who are otherwise unable to meet in our offices.
Online/telehealth clients must be residents of the state of Illinois.
Currently, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, insurance companies are covering telehealth services just as they would traditional in-office services.
Divorce & Life Coaching
Divorce coaching is a specialized service that specifically addresses an individual’s emotional issues that arise during and resulting from a divorce. In addition to providing support during this stressful time, a divorce coach can help a client:
- Communicate more effectively
- Prioritize interests and goals
- Understand and accept the issues relating to the divorce
- Gain insight into divorce related issues
Mediation of issues related to divorce, marriage, and parenting issues. Divorce mediators act as neutrals who work with both parties to facilitate the terms of the divorce settlement including any parenting plan (otherwise known as a child custody agreement). This is an option for those going through a divorce but seeking an option other than the typical litigated process. Our divorce mediation services are only provided to those with whom we have no clinical or therapeutic relationship.
